The Clinically Studied Oral Supplement for Brighter, Clearer Skin
Crystal Tomato® Whitening Supplement was evaluated in a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial - a rigorous study design intended to reduce bias. The study was conducted at the National Skin Centre, Singapore, and its results were published in the peer-reviewed U.S. Journal of Pigmentary Disorders. This page summarises what the researchers measured, what they found, and what those findings mean for your skin.
The Study at a Glance
In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, neither the participants nor the researchers knew who received the active supplement and who received a placebo until the study was complete - a rigorous study design intended to reduce bias when evaluating efficacy. The trial enrolled 44 participants with melasma, of whom 36 completed all three study visits. Assessments were conducted at baseline, Week 8, and Week 12. All 44 enrolled participants were included in the analysis. Pigmentation was measured using the modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI), a validated clinical scoring system, and skin redness was assessed using an erythema score.
Key Finding 1: More Than Half of Participants Achieved Over 50% Improvement in Melasma Severity
By Week 12, 53% of participants in the Crystal Tomato® group achieved more than a 50% improvement in melasma severity (mMASI score), compared with 31.6% in the placebo group.
What this means: This is a responder measure: it reports how many people achieved a substantial result, not an average across the group. More than half the active group achieved over 50% improvement in pigmentation severity, at roughly 1.7× the rate seen on placebo. The placebo group followed the same sun-avoidance and skincare regimen.
Reduction in Melasma Severity by Day 54
• Participants receiving Crystal Tomato® together with a topical lightening regimen showed a 46% reduction in melasma severity (mMASI score) by Day 54, compared with placebo.
Key Finding 2: Response Rate Increased Between Week 8 and Week 12
At Week 8, 76.5% of participants in the Crystal Tomato® group achieved more than a 25% improvement in melasma severity. By Week 12, this increased to 82.4%, compared with 68.4% in the placebo group. At Week 12, 53% of the Crystal Tomato® group also achieved more than 50% improvement, compared with 31.6% of the placebo group.
What this means: The benefit continued to develop over the study period. Both the number of responders and the depth of response increased between Week 8 and Week 12, indicating that results continued to improve over the three-month study period. These findings help set realistic expectations for the time over which results were observed.
• The proportion of participants achieving more than a 50% improvement in melasma severity increased with continued use, from Week 8 through Week 12.
Key Finding 3: Improvement in Skin Redness at 12 Weeks
• Participants in the Crystal Tomato® group showed an improvement in skin redness (erythema score) after 12 weeks. Skin redness was assessed separately from melasma severity.
Safety: No Adverse Effects Attributed to the Oral Supplement
No adverse effects attributed to the Whitening Supplement were reported during the clinical study. These findings provide safety and tolerability data for the oral supplement over the 12-week study period.
How the Whitening Supplement Works
Crystal Tomato® is formulated with colourless carotenoid-rich tomato powder from non-GMO tomatoes, together with L-cysteine. Unlike carotenoids such as carotene and lycopene, which contribute yellow, orange and red colour, colourless carotenoids such as phytoene and phytofluene primarily absorb in the ultraviolet rather than the visible region of the spectrum and are therefore essentially colourless. The formulation used in the trial provided 800 mg of colourless carotenoid-rich tomato powder and 50 mg of L-cysteine per caplet. L-cysteine supports the body's production of glutathione, an antioxidant.
